A New Home for Bonsai at Longwood Gardens Lecture by Matt Turner

Be transported to the Bonsai Courtyard at Longwood Gardens with Bonsai Grower Matt Turner. Turner will begin with an overview of Longwood Gardens—its seasonal displays and highlights for visitors—before exploring the history and evolving design of bonsai at the Garden, including unique collections dating back to 1959. Learn about the art and ethics of traditional yamadori bonsai cultivation, along with inspiration for creating your own “yardadori” bonsai from landscape plants. Drawing from years of study with numerous bonsai artists, Turner offers a behind-the-scenes look at bonsai.

About the Speaker

Longwood Bonsai Grower Matt Turner joined the team in 2023 to help care for the Garden’s growing bonsai collection. He previously worked at The Hidden Gardens, one of the largest retailers of yamadori (pre-bonsai collected from the wild), and studied with several American and international bonsai artists while they worked on private collections in the Chicagoland area.
