Homeschool Days

School aged children will explore the fascinating world of plants with hands-on learning activities at the Botanical Garden’s Homeschool Day. This two-hour program is designed for homeschooled students and includes two sessions for ages 5-11 and ages 12-18. A self-guided curriculum-based activity will also be available.

Monday, March 2 | 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.

9:45 – 10:30 a.m. (Concurrent Sessions)

  • Session 1 for Ages 5-11 – Terrarium Ecosystem Program: Learn about what plants do for us, what plants need and take home a water cycle with plants in a terrarium you build yourself.
  • Session 1 for Ages 12-18 – Cooking Workshop: Learn how to make two healthy and tasty recipes in the Outdoor Teaching Kitchen using fresh ingredients from the Culinary Garden.

10:45 – 11:30 a.m. (Concurrent Sessions)

  • Session 2 for Ages 5-11 – Botanical Garden Tour and Tasting: Explore the Culinary Garden while smelling and tasting spring produce. Includes a culinary demo and chef-prepared tasting.
  • Session 2 for Ages 12-18 – Conservatory Tour: A guided exploration of plants from deserts, rainforests, tropical regions and more in five unique rooms.

9:30 – 11:30 a.m. (Self-Guided Activity)

  • Ages 5 and up: Self-guided exploration of the Botanical Garden.

Make a day of it by bringing a picnic and enjoy having lunch following the scheduled sessions. Fee: $10 student, $11 adult; registration deadline is 96 hours prior to event

Monday, April 6 | 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.

 9:45 – 10:30 a.m. (Concurrent Sessions)

  • Session 1 for Ages 5-11 – Painting with Plants: Examine the many ways plants are used by humans, including how plants are used to produce colors for dyes. Each student will create a self-portrait from plant dyes.
  • Session 1 for Ages 12-18 – Make Your Own After School Snack: Learn to make three simple and delicious after school snacks during this hands-on cooking activity.

 10:45 – 11:30 a.m. (Concurrent Sessions)

  • Session 2 for Ages 5-11 – Fresh Herb Exploration and Harvest: Smell and taste fresh herbs in the Culinary Garden. Learn how to make herb infused water and how to use herbs in your kitchen.
  • Session 2 for Ages 12-18 – Extracting DNA from Strawberries: Discover DNA– the molecule with the instructions an organism needs to develop, live and reproduce.

 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. (Self-Guided Activity)

  • Ages 5 and up – Self-guided exploration of the Botanical Garden.

  • Session 1 for Ages 5-11 – Pond dipping: Many more creatures live in water than fish. We will examine some of the critters in the waters of the Botanical Garden.
  • Session 1 for Ages 12-18 – DeLITEful Desserts: Learn to create two delicious desserts while using healthy ingredients in the Outdoor Teaching Kitchen.

 10:45 – 11:30 a.m. (Concurrent Sessions)

  • Session 2 for Ages 5-11 – Salsa Fest: Learn to make two healthy salsa recipes during this hands-on activity while using fresh ingredients from the Culinary Garden.
  • Session 2 for Ages 12-18 – Ethnobotany Tour: Journey through the Botanical Garden on a guided tour to find plants that many cultures use for everything from clothing to basketry to medicines.

 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. (Self-Guided Activity)

  • Ages 5 and up – Self-guided exploration of the Botanical Garden.
